Description: Understanding patients’ perspectives about health and healthcare delivery enhances our
understanding on how they communicate in health situations, why they interact as they do, and what
motivates them to act on health messages. This assignment requires you to describe and analyze a patient’s
blog to gain there perspective.
Step 1: Select a blog authored by a patient from the list below. (I skimmed and they appear useful). Just click
on the link to be directed the blog.
Step 2: Review the profile/background of the blogger.
✓ Select no more than 5 substantive blog entries that interest you and look for connections between
those blogs and concepts and topics covered in the text. You may have to search more than 5 blog
posts to find ones that you can write about.
✓ Read the blog entries, take notes on the blogs as they relate to specific course concepts, and include
citations in your notes so that you can include proper in-text citations in your written paper.
✓ You can simply copy the link to the blog entry to include in your written paper so that your instructor
can easily link to the blog entry that you are reviewing for evaluation purposes.
✓ Please use quotation marks around any information that you take directly from the blog post or that
you take directly from the text. Use quotes sparingly.
✓ When possible, please paraphrase definitions and content from the text, rather than using direct
quotes. Paraphrasing is a skill that we are practicing in this assignment. Please always include proper
in-text citations for all content that you take from sources.
Step 3: Write a brief paper (1400-2000 words) using the content and format guidelines described below.
• Biography [heading]
✓ Write a brief bio of the blogger for your introduction (e.g., personal background, credentials if any,
their vision or perspective on the blog’s purposes, is there an intended audience, etc.)
✓ 150-word max for this section.
Conceptual Links [heading]
✓ Select 8 identifiable concepts from the text that you believe are present in the blogs.
✓ For each concept,
(a) identify it by name and underline it,
(b) formally define each concept (in your own words, do not use direct quotes from the text—
paraphrase to show you understand the concept, include proper citations),
(c) explain how that concept is present in the blog. Give 1-3 examples from the blog to illustrate
each concept
✓ 1000-1500 word range for this section
• Critique [heading]
✓ Evaluate the blog’s content. Some topics to consider (don’t have to answer all): quality of information,
compelling communication of ideas (keeps your interest), attractiveness of layout, helpful additional
features (photos, links to websites, digital images, etc.), what you liked/disliked.
✓ Explain how the blog could help individuals who experience similar health concerns (or other health
concerns).
✓ Always explain your opinions with evidence/reasoning.
✓ End your critique with whether you would recommend this blog to someone interested in health or
health communication and justify your recommendation (or lack thereof) using course
content/knowledge.
✓ 250-350 words for this section
Non-Content Requirements
✓ Standard-essay style, however you do not need to have an introduction or conclusion. Instead use the
bolded headings listed in Step 3 to organize your paper.
✓ Typed, double spaced, 12-point, font, 1-inch margins.
✓ Use the name of the Blog as your title (neither a cover page nor abstract is needed).
✓ Length Requirements: 1400-2000 words in length. Points will be lost for papers that do not meet these
lengths requirements.
✓ Use mechanics of good writing: proper punctuation, spelling, and grammar. Proofread your work for typos,
etc. Your content should be well organized. Do not submit a paper with sections that only contain one
paragraph. Instead, adopt an efficient and effective organizational style that presents your content to the
reader in a coherent and cohesive organizational style.
✓ Include in-text citations to reference your sources of information (i.e., the textbook for concept definitions,
and the blog pages for examples from the blogs).
✓ At the end of your paper include a list of the titles of the 5 blog entries that you analyzed for this paper
and page links for those entries so I can easily access them for evaluation purposes.
