Y‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‌‍‍ou may have a general understanding of the difference between ethics and legality, but could you explain the distinction? It is not always easy to know where to draw the line between the two. Some behaviors are both unethical and illegal; however, this is not always the case. When legal but unethical practices are discovered within an organization, the impact can still be detrimental, as in the case of a tarnished reputation or loss of a community’s trust. In this Discussion, you will focus on the significance of the connection between unethical practices and the legality, particularly in terms of the impact on an organization. To prepare for this Discussion: Review this week’s Learning Resources. Watch the following media piece located in this week’s Learning Resources: Legal vs. Ethical Liability: A Crisis of Leadership and Culture | Mel Fugate | TEDxSMU. Consider the following statement: Ethics are more important than legality in an organization. Review the Academic Writing Expectations for 1000-Level Courses. By Day 3 Post a 225- to 300-word (3- to 4-paragraph) explanation of the impact of unethical behaviors and business practices on ‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‌‍‍an organization. In your explanation, address the following: Do you agree with the statement that ethics are more important than legality in an organization? Why or why not? How might unethical—but legal—business behaviors or practices affect an organization? What about behaviors or business practices that are both unethical and illegal? Provide two examples of unethical business behavior or business practices—one legal, one illegal. These examples should be from the news, from social media, or from personal experiences. For each example, include the potential impact of the behavior/business practice on an organization. Consider the impact on individual employees, on relationships within teams and with leaders, as well as on the success of the business. To support your response, be sure to reference at least one properly cited scholarly source.
